Just arrived in Rio? Never taken the metro or the train? Relax — everyone was a beginner once. Here's everything you need to know, no red tape.
R$ 7,90 per metro trip — switching between Lines 1, 2 and 4 without leaving costs nothing extra! A metro fare covers one trip on Lines 1, 2 and 4, with as many transfers between them as you like, as long as you don't exit the station. The train is charged separately (R$ 7,60): to use the metro and the train on the same trip, the transfer fare with a Riocard card and the Bilhete Único Intermunicipal (the state's integrated fare card) comes to R$ 9,40 in total. People with a registered Bilhete Único Intermunicipal pay R$ 5,00 on the metro (social fare).
The easiest way — contactless: on the metro, just tap your contactless credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard or Elo) or your NFC phone/watch on the turnstile — no need to buy a ticket. Jaé and Riocard cards are also accepted at every metro station.
Just one trip? Buy a single QR Code ticket at the ticket office or at the self-service machines in any metro station (R$ 7,90). On the train, the ticket (R$ 7,60) is sold at the ticket office; some stations accept PIX, and contactless only works at some stations.
Riding often? The metro's Giro card pays off (R$ 11,90: a R$ 4,00 refundable deposit + R$ 7,90 of credit, top up via the app or website), or the Riocard with Bilhete Único Intermunicipal, which gives you the transfer fares: metro + train, intercity bus or ferries for R$ 9,40 in total. On the train, Riocard or the Bilhete Único Intermunicipal are accepted — physical card only.
Free rides and discounts: there are free rides provided by law (for example, for seniors and people with disabilities, with registration) and the R$ 5,00 social fare on the metro for Bilhete Único Intermunicipal holders. If in doubt, ask at the ticket office or the station staff.
Each line runs in two directions, and the signs show the name of the last station in that direction — that's the "direction".
Example: you're at Carioca (Line 1) and want to go to Copacabana (Cardeal Arcoverde), to the south. The Line 1 train continues straight onto Line 4 to Jardim Oceânico — so follow the signs for the Jardim Oceânico direction.
💛 Our app sorts this out for you: every route shows the direction of each leg. Took the wrong side? Get off at the next stop, cross the platform and head back — without paying again (as long as you don't exit through the turnstiles).
A transfer is just changing trains without leaving the station — between metro Lines 1, 2 and 4 it costs nothing extra. Get off and follow the signs with the color and number of the next line. Between Lines 1 and 2, you change on the Central do Brasil – Botafogo stretch; Line 4 runs straight on from Line 1 (the same train goes from Uruguai to Jardim Oceânico).
Metro × train: the connections are at Central do Brasil, São Cristóvão, Maracanã, Triagem and Pavuna. This works differently from other cities: you have to exit the metro and pay for the train — or use the Riocard + Bilhete Único Intermunicipal transfer fare (R$ 9,40 in total).
💛 In the app, the route shows exactly where to get off and which line or branch line to take — with an animated map showing the way.
The metro runs Monday to Saturday, from 5 am to midnight — on Sundays and public holidays, from 7 am to 11 pm. To make sure you catch your transfer late at night, be on the platform of the transfer station before closing time.
Trains: the first departures are around 4:20 am, and each branch line has its own timetable. Intervals vary by line and time of day — on the outer branch lines and extensions (Paracambi, Vila Inhomirim and Guapimirim), the wait can be much longer.
Exact times are at metrorio.com.br and trensrj.com.br — check your branch line before you go.
Suitcase: no problem — just don't block doors and aisles.
Bicycle: folding bikes, in a cover, are allowed at any time on the metro. Regular bikes only on weekdays after 9 pm and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, preferably in the last car. Surfboards follow the same rule (covered, up to 2 m). On the train, check TrensRJ's rules.
Animals: small dogs and cats, in a carrier, can travel on the metro. Guide dogs always travel; emotional support dogs, with the documents required by the metro.
Station staff can help with any question — don't be shy to ask. Left something on the train? Go to the station's customer service or the official MetrôRio and TrensRJ channels.
👀 Local tip: at the busiest stations (Central, Carioca, Botafogo, Estácio) and on match days at Maracanã or during big events, keep your phone and wallet in front of you. Metro and train are paid separately — check that your card has the transfer fare before leaving the station. And let people get off the train before you get on.
Speak or type your way — the assistant understands, plots the route instantly and guides you like a Carioca friend. In Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Find the way between any two stations on the 11 metro and train lines, with the platform direction and transfers shown line by line — including the metro–train connections at Central, São Cristóvão, Maracanã, Triagem and Pavuna.
Before you go, check the status of the metro lines and the service notices for the train branch lines, straight from the official sources. When the source has no up-to-date information, the app says so clearly — instead of guessing.
Know exactly what you'll pay before you reach the turnstile: metro and train fares, the Giro card, the social fare and transfers with trains, buses and BRT, with up-to-date official prices.
Speak or type — "how do I get to Maracanã?" — and the assistant plots the route instantly, checks the line status and guides you step by step. By text or by voice.
Enter your starting and destination addresses: the app finds the nearest station to each, the walk, and builds the trip.
Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, German and Italian — with automatic detection of your phone's language. Perfect for welcoming visitors to Rio.
