Just arrived in Porto? Never taken the metro? Relax — we've all been newbies. Here's everything you need to know, no hassle.
1,40 € per trip — with 1 hour of transfers included within zones! The Andante Z2 ticket covers the city of Porto and is valid for 1 hour from validation: you can change metro lines and even hop on buses in that time without paying again. The more zones you cross, the higher the fare (Z3 1,85 €, Z4 2,30 € — the Airport, from downtown, is Z4).
Easiest way — the Andante Azul card: buy it at the ticket machines in any station (0,60 € for the card, rechargeable), load Z2 tickets — or the zones you need — and before boarding the train, tap it on the yellow validator on the platform. There are no gates: validating is mandatory on every trip and every line change.
Prefer a counter? Buy or top up the card at the Loja Andante in the main stations (Trindade, Campanhã, Casa da Música, Airport) — just ask for "an Andante Z2" and pay.
Riding often? It's worth loading bulk tickets (10 tickets = 1 free) or the Andante pass (monthly: 30–40 €, personalized card 6 €) — it also works on buses and urban trains in the zones you choose. For a visit, the Andante Tour gives unlimited trips for 1 day (7,75 €) or 3 days (16,55 €).
Free and discounted fares: children up to age 3 ride free on an adult's lap, and there are free and discounted fares for young people, seniors and residents (sub13/sub18/sub23 and +65 passes). Ask at the Loja Andante — it's quick and the staff will help.
Every line has two directions, and the signs show the name of the final station in that direction. That's the "direction".
Example: you're at São Bento (line D, yellow) and want to go to Pólo Universitário, to the north. The northern end of the line is Hospital São João — so follow the signs for "Hospital São João".
💛 Our app sorts this out for you: every route shows "towards X" for each leg. Took the wrong side? Get off at the next station, cross to the opposite platform and go back — without paying again (within the ticket's 1-hour window).
A transfer is just switching trains without leaving the station — and it's free, already included in your ticket. Get off the train and look for the signs with the color of the next line (e.g. yellow circle — line D). In central Porto several lines share the same platform: check the letter on the train's destination sign before boarding and check the direction again.
💛 In our app, the route shows exactly where to get off and which line to take next — with an animated map showing the way.
The metro runs every day, from 6 am until 1 am — including weekends and holidays (the first and last train vary by line and station).
Frequency: at peak times a train on each line comes every 6–10 minutes (on the central trunk, between Campanhã and Senhora da Hora, several lines add up and the wait is much shorter); off-peak, the typical wait is 10–15 minutes — at night it can reach 20 minutes. No need to run: there's always another one coming.
The exact schedule for your station is on the board on the platform — if in doubt, get there before 0:30 am to be safe.
Suitcase: no problem at all — just avoid blocking doors and aisles.
Bicycle: allowed on weekdays from 10 am to 5 pm and from 7 pm to 1 am, and at weekends and holidays at any time — through the rear door of the car, without taking up the reduced-mobility space. A folding bike counts as luggage and is always allowed. Scooters must be switched off and carried by hand — riding them inside stations is prohibited.
Pets: companion animals travel inside a carrier (bag, backpack or proper box), without disturbing other passengers. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are always allowed.
Staff in vests at the main stations and platforms will help with any question — don't be shy. Platforms have emergency and information intercoms; if you left something on the train, contact the Linha Metro or the station's Loja Andante.
👀 Tip from a daily rider: always validate your card on the yellow validator before boarding — there are no gates, but there are ticket inspectors and the fine is steep. Keep your phone and wallet close to you and let people off the train before you get on.
Speak or type in your own words — the assistant understands, plans the route on the spot and guides you like a friend from Porto. In Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Plan the way between any two stations on the 6 lines, with the platform direction and transfers shown line by line — including on the shared central trunk.
Before heading down to the platform, know whether your line is running normally or with disruptions — straight from the official Metro do Porto source.
Know exactly what you'll pay before you validate: Z2 ticket, Andante 24, Andante Tour and passes, always up to date with the official fare table.
Speak or type — "how do I get to Ribeira?" — and the assistant plans the route on the spot, checks the line status and guides you step by step. By text or by voice.
Type in your departure and arrival addresses: the app finds the nearest station to each one, the walk, and builds the route.
Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, German and Italian — with automatic detection of your phone's language. Perfect for anyone visiting Porto.
Meeting someone? Share your trip link and they can follow your estimated position on the map until you arrive — no sign-up for either of you.
