🎓 First time on the metro?

The guide nobody gives you

Just arrived in Lisbon? Never taken the metro? Relax — we've all been newbies. Here's everything you need to know, no hassle.

💰How much does it cost?

1,90 € per trip — with 1 hour of transfers included! The Carris/Metro ticket is valid for 1 hour from validation: you can change metro lines and even hop on Carris buses in that time without paying again. With zapping, each trip is even cheaper.

🎫How to pay (no mystery)

Easiest way — the navegante ocasional card: buy it at the ticket machines in any station (0,50 € for the card, valid for 1 year and rechargeable), load trips or zapping — and at the gate just tap it on the yellow reader and the door opens.

Prefer a counter? Buy or top up the card at the ticket office or at the vending machines in any station — just ask for "um bilhete" and pay.

Riding often? It's worth loading zapping or the navegante pass (monthly: 30–40 €) — the credit stays on the same card and also works on buses and, in the metro area, on trains.

Free and discounted fares: children up to 3 ride free on an adult's lap, and there are free and discounted fares for young people, seniors and residents (navegante 12/18/23 and +65). Ask at the ticket office — it's quick and the staff will help.

🧭How to find the right train (the secret of the "direction")

Every line runs in two directions, and the signs show the name of the last station in that direction. That's the "direction".

Example: you're at Rossio (Green line) and want to go to Alvalade, to the north. The northern end of the line is Telheiras — so follow the signs for "Telheiras".

💛 Our app sorts this out for you: every route shows "towards X" for each leg. Took the wrong side? Get off at the next station, cross to the opposite platform and go back — without paying again.

🔁Changing lines (transfers) without fear

A transfer is just switching trains without leaving the station — and it's free, already included in your ticket. Get off the train and look for the signs with the color of the next line (e.g. green circle — Green line). Follow the corridors to its platform and check the direction again.

💛 In our app, the route shows exactly where to get off and which line to take next — with an animated map showing the way.

🕐What time does it open and close?

The metro runs every day, from 6:30 am until 1 am — including weekends and holidays.

Frequency: at peak times a train comes every 4–6 minutes; off-peak, the typical wait is 6–10 minutes — at night it can reach 12 minutes. No need to run down the stairs: there's always another one coming.

The exact hours for your station are on the board next to the gates — if in doubt, get there before 0:30 am to be safe.

🎒What can you bring?

Suitcase: no problem at all — just avoid blocking doors and aisles.

Bicycle: allowed at any time, at most two per car — avoid crowded cars and peak hours. A folding bike counts as luggage and is always allowed. Scooters must be switched off and carried by hand — riding them inside stations is prohibited.

Pets: companion animals travel properly contained (box/carrier), without disturbing other passengers. Guide dogs are always allowed; dangerous breeds may not travel.

🆘Need help?

Staff in vests at the gates and on the platforms will help with any question — don't be shy. Platforms have emergency intercoms; if you left something on the train, look for Lost and Found at the station.

👀 Tip from a daily rider: keep your phone and wallet tucked away near the doors — tourist areas attract pickpockets — and let people off the train before you get on.
