🎓 First time on the metro?

The guide nobody gives you

Just arrived in town? Never taken the metro? Relax — everyone was a newbie once. Here's everything you need to know, no red tape.

💰How much does it cost?

R$ 5,40 per trip — no matter the distance! You can cross the whole city and change lines as many times as you like (Metro and CPTM), paying only once. You only pay again if you leave the station and come back in.

🎫How to pay (no mystery)

Easiest way — QR code on your phone: download the TOP app (official, free) and buy a "QR Code" with a card or Pix. At the turnstile, hold the QR up to the glass reader and the gate opens.

No phone? Buy a printed QR at the ticket office or at the self-service machines in any station.

Riding often? Get a TOP card or a Bilhete Único (rechargeable, with bus transfers included).

Free and discounted fares: seniors 60+ and people with disabilities ride free; students pay half. Ask at the ticket office — the staff will help.

🧭How to find the right train (the secret of the "direction")

Every line runs in two directions, and the signs show the name of the last station in that direction — that's the "direction".

Example: you're at Sé and want to go to Santana (north). The northern end of the line is Tucuruvi — follow the signs for "Sentido Tucuruvi".

💛 Our app sorts this out for you: every route shows the direction for each leg. Took the wrong side? Get off at the next station, cross the platform and go back — without paying again.

🔁Changing lines (transfers) without fear

A transfer is just switching trains without leaving the station — free, it's already paid for. Get off and follow the signs with the color and number of the next line to the other platform.

💛 In the app, the route shows exactly where to get off and which line to take — with an animated map showing the way.

🕐What time does it open and close?

The Metro runs every day, from 4:40 am until midnight (CPTM: ~4 am to midnight).

🌙 New: on Saturdays, lines 1-Azul, 2-Verde, 3-Vermelha and 15-Prata run 24 hours — overnight, trains every 20–30 min.

The exact hours for your station are posted on the board next to the turnstiles.

🎒What can you bring?

Suitcase: no problem — just don't block doors and aisles.

Bicycle: at specific times (off-peak), in the last car, max. 4 per train. A folding bike in a bag is allowed anytime.

Pets: up to 10 kg, in a rigid carrier, outside weekday peak hours (6–10 am and 4–7 pm).

🆘Need help?

Staff in vests at the turnstiles and on the platforms will help with any question — don't be shy. Platforms have emergency intercoms; if you forgot something, look for Lost and Found.

👀 Local tip: near the doors, keep your phone tucked away; let people off before you get on.

🐣 Plan my first route In the app, turn on "First trip mode" (Guide tab) and every route comes with step-by-step instructions.
