Just arrived in Barcelona? Never taken the metro before? Relax — we've all been newbies. Here's everything you need to know, no hassle.
€2.90 per trip — changing metro lines without exiting costs nothing extra! The single ticket is valid for one trip on the metro, bus or Montjuïc funicular within zone 1, and inside the metro you can change lines without going out through the gates. If you're going to make several trips, the T-casual (10 trips, €13) is a better deal, and it also allows integrated transfers for 75 minutes. Careful: neither the single ticket nor the T-casual is valid at the airport stations (Aeroport T1 and T2, line L9 Sud) — there you need the airport ticket (€5.90) or a pass that includes it.
The easiest way — the T-mobilitat card: at the machines in any station, buy your ticket or pass loaded onto the T-mobilitat card (or in its official app for your phone) and validate by tapping it on the reader at the gate. The machines work in several languages and accept bank cards and cash.
Important: on the metro you can't yet pay by tapping your bank card at the gate — that only exists on the bus. Always buy your ticket before entering. Just one trip? The single ticket (€2.90) is sold at the machines and isn't valid at the airport stations: for Aeroport T1 and T2 there's the airport ticket (€5.90).
Frequent rider? Consider the T-casual (€13, 10 trips, transfers included for 75 minutes, excluding airport) or the T-usual (€22.80, unlimited trips for 30 days, personal, airport included). For a busy day there's the T-dia (€12, 24 hours unlimited from the first validation, with airport round trip). Just visiting? The Hola Barcelona Travel Card covers 1 to 5 consecutive days (from €12.50 for one day) on the metro, bus, FGC and Rodalies within zone 1, airport included. For families and groups: T-familiar (€11.50, 8 trips in 30 days) and T-grup (€91, 70 trips in 30 days), both excluding the airport.
Free and discounted fares: children under 4 travel free, no ticket needed; from 4 to 16, the T-16 is free and personal. Under-30s have the T-jove (€45.50, 90 days unlimited in all zones, airport included). Residents with the reduced metropolitan pink card pay the T-4 (€2.25, 10 trips). Ask at a TMB customer service point — the staff will help you.
Every line has two directions, and the signs show the name of the terminus station for that direction. That's the "direction" (in Catalan, "direcció").
Example: you're at Catalunya and want to go to Park Güell (Lesseps station) on line L3 (green). Heading north, trains run in the direction of Trinitat Nova — so follow the signs for "Direcció Trinitat Nova".

A transfer is just changing trains without leaving the station — inside the TMB metro it costs nothing extra. Get off the train and follow the signs with the color and number of the next line (e.g. green circle "L3"). In big stations like Passeig de Gràcia, Catalunya, Diagonal or La Sagrera, the corridors are long: allow 5 to 10 minutes on foot. Switching between the TMB metro and the FGC lines (L6, L7, L8 and L12) usually means going through the gates again: with the T-casual and the integrated passes it counts as a transfer. Lines L9 and L10 have two separate sections (Nord and Sud) that don't connect with each other: check the section before boarding.

The TMB metro runs Sunday to Thursday, from 5:00 am to midnight — on Fridays and the eve of public holidays until 2:00 am, and on Saturday night it runs non-stop through to Sunday, just like on Sant Joan, La Mercè and New Year's Eve. The FGC lines have their own timetables, and at night the NitBus buses take over.
Frequency: at peak times a train comes every 2 to 4 minutes on the main lines (L1 to L5); off-peak, the typical wait is 4 to 8 minutes — late in the evening and on the L9, L10 and L11 sections it can reach 8 to 15 minutes. No need to run: there's always another one coming.
The exact schedule for your station is shown on the platforms and on tmb.cat — if in doubt, arrive before 11:30 pm (or before 1:30 am on Fridays) to be safe.
Suitcase: yes, no problem — just avoid blocking the doors and corridors.
Bicycle: allowed on the metro, except during weekday peak hours (check the time slots on tmb.cat); on weekends and public holidays, all day. Take it in the first or last car and keep the doors clear. Electric scooters are banned on all public transport. A folded folding bike counts as luggage and is always allowed.
Pets: small ones travel free in a closed carrier; dogs are allowed on the metro on a leash and muzzled, one per person, and it's best to avoid peak hours. Guide dogs and assistance dogs travel free, everywhere.
TMB staff at customer service points and in stations will help with any question — don't be shy to ask. Platforms have emergency and information intercoms; if you left something on the train, contact TMB's lost-and-found office.
👀 Tip from a regular: in busy stations (Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia, Liceu, Sagrada Família) and on crowded trains, keep your phone and wallet in front of you — pickpockets are very active. Always validate when you enter (at the airport stations, also when you exit) and hold on to your ticket until you leave: inspectors do fine. On lines L9 and L10, pay close attention to the section, Nord or Sud. And let passengers off before you get on.
